Millstone Valley Scenic Byway Visitor Center Opens for 2023 Season

Join us in celebrating the 13th annual National Moth Week in the park after dark! View our tiny flying friends when they come visit our light. Help collect citizen science data while you learn about the valuable role moths have in our ecosystem. 

This event is for ages 8 and up, and all minors must be accompanied by an adult.

JULY 5, 2025:

New Jersey State Park issued permits are available for deer bow hunters to access over 2,000 acres of land within Six Mile Run Reservoir Site. There are also a limited number of firearm permits available for a limited area within the Six Mile Run Reservoir Site. Please carefully read the instructions below to apply for either a bow or firearm permit.

BE ADVISED:  Hunters MUST APPLY FOR A PARK PERMIT TO HUNT ANYWHERE WITHIN SIX MILE RUN. Download/Print the deer hunting map for Six Mile Run by clicking the link below:

PLEASE NOTE:

1. One stand/blind permitted per hunter;
2. Parking Permit only needs to be displayed in Hunter Only Lots (see a map for details);
3. Please review the map as permissible hunting areas have changed;
4. Stands are prohibited from being placed directly on Six Mile Run Reservoir property lines or in the view-shed of residents residing directly adjacent to Six Mile Run Reservoir Site.

BOW SEASON:  There will be NO LIMIT on the number of bow permits issued for Six Mile Run. FIREARM SEASON:  A total of 15 permits will be issued for the 2023/2024 season by a RANDOM lottery. SCUDDERS FALLS NOW CLOSED ON WEEKENDS

BE ADVISED:

Effective immediately, the Scudders Falls section of D&R Canal State Park WILL BE CLOSED to for parking on FRIDAYS, SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS during the summer season.

The closure is a result of excessive usage that has led to violations of the State Park Service code, creating an unsafe environment for visitors and park staff. Weekend visitors who park at this location for canal towpath use or launching kayak and canoes are encouraged to use the other public designated locations at D&R Canal State Park, Bulls Island Recreation Area or nearby Washington Crossing State Park.

Join Friends of Princeton Nursery Lands and wildlife biologist Blaine Rothauser to explore the world of New Jersey Moths during National Moth Week. We seldom see them, as most fly at night, but moths are important pollinators, and their caterpillars are a major food source for baby birds.

TIME: 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
COST: FREE

After a slide presentation on moths, we will step outside and turn on a 1,000-watt light after dark to lure moths and identify them. Bring a camera for some awesome close-ups!

Bug spray, flashlight or headlamp, and comfortable walking shoes recommended. You will be walking outside at dusk and dark. This night event is geared towards ages 12+.

BRIDGE & PARKING AREA AT 5-MILE LOCK CLOSED FOR REPAIRS; NO TRAIL ACCESS

Due to needed bridge repair and construction activities at the 5-Mile Lock both trail access and vehicle parking at this location is currently closed. As a result, the D&R Canal multi-use trail will not be accessible from the 5-Mile Lock Parking Lot located along Easton Avenue in Franklin Township.

The nearest parking areas/trail access points are:

  • To The North: The Demott Lane Parking Area located at 1298 Easton Avenue, Somerset NJ 08873
  • To The South: South Bound Brook Parking Lot, Lock 11 located at 169 Canal Rd, South Bound Brook, NJ 08880.
